We're lucky to have Cheryl Harper here as she talks about family and the ties that bind us at the Pink Heart Society...
If you’re as lucky as I am to have had a second mother, one whose only claim on you was deep love instead of blood ties, you understand what a blessing they can be. Mine was my mother’s best friend, and I can name at least one area of my life that would be completely different if I had never known her. She remembered birthdays and Christmas and shared books and pool floats with me, and never once explained to me why I had to clean my room. My mother was awesome. It makes perfect sense that her best friend was, too.
When I start any story, the beginning scene unfolds in my brain. For “Never Say Never on New Year’s” I had this idea of a very polished woman marching up to the pet store door, a grumpy man yanking her inside, and a hunt for a guinea pig. As I got to know the characters, I realized they were old friends who’d been separated by diverging paths and one big loss. Chris lost his wife, and Ren her best friend. They remain connected through Sydney, Chris’s daughter who is driving him insane with her complete immersion in British pop culture. Ren left for London; his daughter is just counting the days until she can do the same and that threat is all Ren’s fault.
When her London dream falls apart, Ren isn’t as sad as she thought she’d be. Returning to Christmas Town means time with Sydney…and Chris. Finding their way through this new…whatever it will be takes some adjustment, some bravery, and the help of a teenage matchmaker.
What about you? Do you have a story about an aunt or a stepfather or a neighbor who made a difference in your life? I certainly hope so!
Whether she’s writing, reading, or just checking the items off of her daily to-do list, small-town girl Cheryl Harper loves her romance mixed with a little laughter. When she’s not working, you will find her ignoring housework, cursing yard work, and spending way too much time with a television remote in her hand.
