We're delighted to welcome #SYTYCW winner Amanda Cinelli to the Pink Heart Society as she talks about alpha superheroes...
I’m going to start this post by saying that I am not a comic book expert. I write romance for Harlequin Presents, so i’m no stranger to a bit of fantasy...along with an arrogant alpha billionaire or two.
But today I’m writing about a different kind of alpha. The Superhero Alpha. My husband is a huge comic book nerd, and over the past few years we have bonded over a mutual love for superhero movies. (See ridiculously embarrassing photo)
Now before you roll your eyes, trust me, the plot lines can be a little out there sometimes but i’m always impressed by the depth of backstory and characterization. These are characters that have been formed and molded over a period of decades through comic book writers, artists, screenwriters and cinematographers. There are alot of explosions (BAM! CRASH!) but there is also some damn good storytelling.
Alas, I digress, we’re here to talk about alphas!
Now there are some obvious ones, the most obvious probably being Batman. I’m talking about Christian Bale’s Batman, because clearly he is the hottest. I mean... look at that jawline.
If you aren’t familiar with Batman, here’s a little backstory: by day he is the billionaire Bruce Wayne, a man with wealth and power who loves fast cars and beautiful women.
By night he is a masked shadow, a tortured soul who takes solace in patrolling his city while seeking revenge against the villain who murdered his parents.
There’s a lot of darkness in there, hence the name The Dark Knight. But like all heroes, his past is what drives him to do what he does. It’s what makes him Batman.
That dark ambition is one of my favourite traits in a romance hero. Knowing that they have a past that would hold most men back in life, and yet they have used it to fuel a fire that drives their empire, whatever that may be.
Then we have a hero like Iron Man, aka Tony Stark.
Stark is most certainly driven, the genius CEO of Stark enterprises. He is a different kind of alpha hero, with an ego almost as big as the giant flying metal suit he uses to save the world from complete annihilation. But underneath the suit, Stark is made all the more human by the many faults shown in his character. He has a darkness in him too, but it’s the kind of darkness he doesn’t try to hide from the world. He has a penchant for living life in the fast lane.
But, in my opinion, his biggest fault is arguably one of his most appealing traits.
Tony Stark wants to save the world as Iron Man, to control it and keep those he loves safe from harm. He might go about it the wrong way at times, but during his most vulnerable moments you can see that he has a good heart and that he is overprotective from a place of love. This is really shown in his relationship with Pepper Potts, the woman who finally tames his playboy ways. *swoon*
So, just to clarify, there are A LOT of alpha billionaires in the comic book universe. I hope that’s becoming clear?
Now, on to my favourite hero. A TV show that I am OBSESSED with right now.
Oliver Queen starts out living the life that most men dream about. He has the entire world at his fingertips as the spoiled son and heir to his father’s multibillion Queen empire.
But one event changes the entire course of his life. After a shipwreck claims the life of his father he spends five years trapped on a mysterious island. When he finally returns home, he is broken and deeply scarred from what he had to become to survive.
He takes the new found darkness in him and channels it, along some very impressive archery skills into avenging his fathers death and finding out who sabotaged their boat.
In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I am a little bit in love with Oliver Queen. Look at those abs! Plus, I’m a sucker for a tortured hero. And he is never more tortured than when we are caught in the push and pull of his love affair with Felicity Smoek. You see, he sees the world in black and white, and compares himself as a toxic darkness that will pollute the light of someone so beautiful and innocent.
For Oliver, being the Arrow and risking his life day after day means that he cannot form any permanent connections. Especially not with his beautiful blonde hacker sidekick, Felicity. (I could write a whole other post on how bad ass she is!)
So, in summation: I Heart Arrow!
Has Amanda changed your mind on how amazing and complex these superheroes can be? Who is your favourite superhero alpha? Let her know in the comments!
