Male on Monday: Clive Standen

Harlequin Historical author and PHS editor Michelle Styles investigates Clive Standen.

As someone who writes about the Viking era, I am always interested in discovering men who are less smooth around the edges but who can still send the pulse racing. In other words -- battle hardened heroes but who still look good.  Clive Standen who appears in Viking: Hammer of the Gods and in the Viking television series has made his name playing playing battle hardened heroes.

He played the Archer in Robin Hood and Gawian in Camelot. He currently portrays Hagen in Hammer of the Gods and plays Rollo in the Vikings (which has been renewed for a second series). The Rollo character is based on the man who becomes the first Duke of Normandy.

Born in Melton Mowbray, Clive Standen is 6' 2" and got his first start in acting working with a professional stunt team. He holds a gold medal certificate in fencing and is left handed. He also does Muay Thai boxing and can ride horses.  His skills are not limited to historical weaponry as apparently he can assemble/dissemble a M16 rifle in just under a minute. He studied performing arts at Melton Mowbray college as well as being a member of the National Youth theatre in his teens. He then did a three year course at LAMDA (London Academy of Dramatic Art).
He is married with three children and lives in London.

This is a lovely interview from Better where Clive Standen describes how he staged an all day proposal to his wife. It sounded so romantic and I had to wipe a tear from my eye. Definitely a keeper.
