WRITE-AT-HOME-MOM: Mira Lyn Kelly

Harlequin KISS author Mira Lyn Kelly talks about celebrating success Write-At-Home-Mom style…

While ramping toward the release of WAKING UP MARRIED, I've been wrapping up my next book for KISS (ONCE IS NEVER ENOUGH - Summer '13), hustling through revisions on a tight timeline, juggling homework x4, scraping by with the bare minimum of household maintenance (everyone needs socks and SOMETHING to eat before school!!), and doing my darnedest to make sure that the time I was actually with the family...I was WITH the family and not mentally down the hall in my office trying to resolve that sticky plot problem I really didn't want to let get THAT far out of my head! So it's been...intense, lol.

But this last Sat (Dec 1) my first KISS was released. Sunday my revisions were sent in. And Monday... oh, Monday, fun-day...you fabulous day, you...*breathy sigh*… Monday WAKING UP MARRIED was ranked #1 on Amazon's TOP 100 FREE list!!  Do you want to see a picture?? *pulls out wallet and flips through six thousand laminated shots in search of just the right close-up*. OOoh this one!

This story was so much fun to write. Honestly, I was giggling through half of it. Okay, sometimes cackling. And, oh man, was I hoping it would be well received. So seeing it hit the list, was a major moment for me. One, so many of my awesome friends and readers congratulated me on...asking if I'd popped the champagne and how I planned to celebrate.

Well, here's the thing about being a Write-At-Home-Mom with four kids who will each bring a sheet of math work home they need either help completing or checked, three that will need to be quizzed on their spelling words, two that will have some kind of comprehensive theme worksheet or essay THEY TOTALLY DON'T GET, and two that will need your undivided attention for their Guided Reading...Champagne is a really bad idea if ANY of that stuff is actually going to get done.

And what about the mountain of laundry threatening to avalanche--any one of the kids could be lost in there, forever! I’d been promising. Like, I’d been promising to catch up on the paperwork, accumulated clutter with my name on it, dust, food shopping…yes. I’d made a lot of promises I was supposed to deliver on starting Monday. But I wanted to celebrate… so I did. In a sort of compromise kind of way.

I skipped the champagne (even though we had a bottle left from last New Years downstairs)--it really wouldn’t be that much fun to drink alone or even with your online friends at 9am--but I did whip up a batch of cookies (half of which I shared with the kids!). I did the laundry, but skipped the shopping and non-essential tasks that could wait another day. So between loads of wash (there were many), I snarfed cookies, chatted with my friends, checked I was still on the list four hundred times or so, and basically gave myself one more day before the stuff that really needed to get done, started getting done. And I just enjoyed. Celebrated with my husband who told me how proud he was, and my pile kids who don’t totally get WHY this was important to me, but are really enthusiastic about celebrating anyway—and we all went out for an early dinner…obviously, because there was no food in the house, lol!
