Writer’s Workplace: Karen Whiddon and a Give Away!

This week The Pink Heart Society is delighted to get a peek at Karen Whiddon's workplace. Karen writes for two Harlequin lines: Harlequin Romantic Suspense and Nocturne. Welcome, Karen!

When we first bought this house eighteen years ago, the room that's now my office was my daughter's bedroom. These days, she owns her own home in another city.  Her old bedroom was briefly an exercise room, then a guest bedroom, and now it's my office.

As you can see, I didn't tidy up.  I wanted you to see it in it's normal and natural state (messy!)

I have books - not as many as I used to before I got my Kindle.  I gave away hundreds of them, boxes and bags.  I kept all the hard covers and the paperbacks I view as "keepers".

As you can also see, I collect stuffed dogs.  Every time I go on a trip, I try to bring home one.  I love to look for breeds that I don't have.

Note the purple dragon.  It's a dog toy, but I love it as it's sort of my muse (and my one and only tattoo!)

My real life Mini Schnauzer Mitchell Thomas also is always where I am, so he's my writing companion.

And in the end, this is what I face everyday - my computer monitor.  I write my books here, check email here, and all my writing business is conducted here.

I love my office.  It's the one room in my home that's entirely mine!

Now it's your turn.  What's your office like?  Anyone who responds will be put into a random drawing for a free copy of one of Karen's backlist books - winner's choice.

  1. I love your stuffed dogs, so cute, and I love that you gave us your office as it is, I've never been a fan of magazine spreads where houses don't look lived in.

  2. Hi Karen,
Love your office and stuffed dogs collection. I always to try buy something to remember my trip, usually it's a keychain or magnet.

  3. Hey there, Karen!
I think your dog collection is cute. My kids and I all have stuffed animals because my husband was allergic to cat/dog fur/dander for years. Then, less than 10 years ago, he was put on a different medication and now he can be around several types of dogs (although, surprisingly enough, the hypoallergenic ones still cause him to wheeze). Stuffed animals are great intermediary communicators when young children won't talk to their parents, but they WILL talk to their stuffed animals (wink, wink).

I am a self-employed typist, so I have a separate room in my basement for my office. I love my desk, as it's a huge one made for executives, so I have room for a printer, monitor, tower, fax machine, call display box, keyboard, and pencil sharpener, plus I could fit at least six piles of paper across, taking up the "bottom half" of the desk. Combined with the drawers down each side, you'd think I'd have lots of storage, but no. I also have a microwave table I wheel around when necessary, as well as two vertical filing cabinets, two wooden cabinets, and a couple of shelves. I have a window that I cover with a thick curtain so that the sunshine doesn't affect my monitor. It's my "cosy room", I guess.

  4. Thanks everyone! I love my stuffed dogs and my office.

  5. My office doubles as a library & craftsroom and so there is fabrics, books and stuff everywhere. Not very relaxing but I have little space in the house. As a kid I had a stuffed yorkshire terrier that I loved. Couldn't get a real dog (no allergies) & took it everywhere. Somehow it got lost but the fun memories remain.
