Nina Harrington tells the Pink Heart Society what she's reading...

As a schoolgirl growing up in rural Northumberland, my greatest delight was the public library. One long room packed with tall bookshelves and bright labels to tell you what kind of thrilling experience laid in wait on each shelf.

Thrillers, pirates and adventures on the high seas, glorious blockbuster romance novels and more. To a new reader, each and every one of these books held within their covers the promise of new worlds and new experiences and did not fail to deliver.

But there was one particular genre which totally captured my schoolgirl imagination – Science Fantasy. Each week, I would stalk the shelves seeking out the latest book by authors like Andre Norton, Isaac Asimov, Ursula le Guin and Arthur C Clarke.

Who can forget the wonderful Dragon books of Anne McCaffrey?
Or the Miles Vorkosigan series from Lois MacMaster Bujold?

These authors knew how to create new and different worlds which fired the imagination through new experiences and ideas and of course wonderful characters I could relate to, emphasise with and totally believe in.

Since then the world of speculative fiction has expanded to include utopian and dystopian fiction, such as the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, alternative history through steam punk romance, the very popular paranormal fantasy and vampire romance and so much more.

And the most wonderful thing? Many of these books have been written to attract a new generation of middle grade and young adult readers to the magical world of reading and to new worlds and new ideas. Harry Potter and Bella Swan are just two of the wonderful characters who appeal to young adults around the world.

So what have I been reading this week? On my bedside table you will find a mixed and balanced diet of contemporary romance books, urban fantasy, and the latest Percy Jackson title from Rick Riordan.

Every one of them magical, entertaining, exciting and delivering the promise of a superb emotional experience. Bliss.
