Weekend Wind-Down: PHS at Shelfari and A Book With Biddy

This weekend we catch up with aspiring author Biddy as she tells us what she's been up to this month in A Book With Biddy and we tell you what The Pink Heart Society is up to over on Shelfari...

Never let it be said we aren't constantly looking for new ways to spread the word about those little books we all love so much!

Yes indeed. This week The Pink Heart Society branched outwards into the world of cyber space and got itself a nice little spot to play on Shelfari. What is Shelfari you ask? Well... Here's what it has to say about itself:

Based in Seattle, Shelfari introduces readers to our global community of book lovers and encourages them to share their literary inclinations and passions with peers, friends, and total strangers (for now). Shelfari was the first social media site focused on books, and will continue to innovate as it brings together the world's readers. Our mission is to enhance the experience of reading by connecting readers in meaningful conversations about the published word.

Shelfari’s members:
  • Build virtual bookshelves to express themselves to their friends and to the world
  • Discover books that are popular in their trusted circles of friends
  • Influence peers by rating and discussing books online
  • Discover and learn from people with similar reading tastes
  • Participate in online book groups to further explore literature and share ideas
  • Interact with and learn from authors
So that's the official line. Why do we like it? Cos that's the more important question really isn't it?!

First up, it's a place to talk about BOOKS. And we all love to do that here so tick number one. Secondly you get to have your very own little bookshelf like this one that you can add books to as and when you like; ones you've read, one's you'd like to read, one's you're reading now... And you can give them a star rating and even a review if you like so the the rest of the world can see what you thought of them! Cool! This also means you get to have a nosy at what everyone else is reading - INCLUDING THE AUTHORS! You can share your thoughts with friends, ask for recommendations, debate what books are great for research... You can see why we liked it really...

So as of this week The Pink Heart Society has it's very own Member Page here at Shelfari so we can spread the word about Category/Series romance and we've even started our own Group here so you can join us to add books to our shelf, chat about what you're reading, interact with the authors, swap titles of the books you loved... our very own Jenna has already started a conversation about HOW you read - ebook, paperback, hardback... what's your favourite? And are you planning on changing? We'd LOVE you to
come join us to spread the word far and wide and ultimately this will replace out PHS Review Blog so all the reviews will be on Shelfari and YOU can add to them as and when you like!

Oh and did we mention it's FREE to join and really EASY to use? Natasha did it in an hour. Says it all really... And you can use it as little or as much as you like...NO PRESSURE.

Remember you can join us at our Shelfari Group HERE.

Meanwhile we're back again with the lovely Brigid Coady to find out how's she's been getting on in this month's A Book With Biddy...

*staggers in bruised and battered*

So that was June was it? *props open eyelids* yup looks like it was… now does this mean I can spend July sleeping it all off? Well no it doesn’t but I’ll come to why later.

June was the month of revisions and yes they were started but no they aren’t ‘quite’ finished yet. But they will be if I have to pummel them into submission then sit on them until they bang the canvas and throw in the towel.

It has been bloody and disheartening but I have learnt a lot about this whole writing lark, not least that I can’t do revisions in a piecemeal way.

I lost the narrative thread I don’t know how many times. I eventually took the initiative and booked two days off work, a Thursday and Friday so I could have a run at it. I’d like to say that it helped find the narrative thread but I’m not so sure. I seem to have revised myself into a clunky contrived corner which just doesn’t work and yet I can’t think of a way to make it work.

I have been stuck in the corner since last weekend and it is getting a little uncomfortable here. Oh and in this corner I am running round in circles which means every so often I bang my head against the wall. Hmmmm.

There could be external reasons for this. Life has been a little fraught here in Coady World. As I have mentioned before one of the Coady clan has relocated to San Francisco, this has meant I have been look after her rather elderly dog, Bella, whilst she gets settled and then sends for her. Bella is old. Older than we thought, the vet reckons heading for 15; and considering all that she is quite sprightly even with one eye and no sight in the remaining one. But she went to a specialist because of some health concerns which ended up with her having major surgery. The day before I was due my writing days off. I found myself having to wake her owner at 3am SF time to decide whether we just wanted to let her go. As it is we decided that she still had some life in her and she is back with us. Thank goodness!

So I spent my writing days taking breaks to coax her round the block. Also getting up in the night to also take her round the block. London is a lovely place at 4am in the summer… it is just my bed would be better. And after all our worry, all the tears the little madame is playing with her toys, scoffing her food and seems unworried about the rather large scar with staples.

Now we are in July I have to figure out a way to write myself out of my corner. But even better, July is CONFERENCE MONTH!! As you read this I will be at the RNA conference down in Chichester. Talking, laughing and learning with some wonderful people. I will also probably be up too late and drink too much. Ho hum. I am also meeting with the editor from M&B who gave me the revisions. I really wanted to be able to tell her they were done and in the post but that isn’t going to happen (did I mention that building work has been brought forward by two months on my flat?? And I need to order a new kitchen, paint and tiles like yesterday???).

BUT… I WILL be done before I set foot in San Francisco for the RWA National Conference. It will be gone! Well it has to be because my sister says I’m not allowed in her apartment until I can prove it has gone. And I do work best under pressure!

  1. Okay, am feeling very proud of myself for not only joining Shelfari but figuring out to post my photo on it (despite the cut-off head). didn't quite manage it in the one hour time frame though. Ho-hum

And Biddy, get those revisions done and dusted woman so you can have a high old time in Frisco. Hope to see you there.

Heidi (who's only on chapter four of the book she was supposed to have finished by Frisco, so hasn't got a leg to stand on frankly!)

  2. Heidi - I look forward to meeting you in SF. And have the revisions done and dusted. The only problem is I learnt such a lot at the RNA conference I think I need to rethink the revisions!!
